Good news for those who use their Game Boy Advance SP or Nintendo DS as a movie player using Nintendo's Japan-only Play Yan device. It turns out that Play Yan is upgradable via firmware updates. Nintendo has announced the first such update, which will open the device to MP4 movie playback, allowing for true stereo sound. Currently, the Play Yan is limited to ASF format MPEG-4 video files in monaural.

To upgrade your Play Yan, you'll have to download an update file. Once downloaded, the file must be placed in your SD card's root directory.

Wired News talks Revolution with Shigeru Miyamoto!!!

At this year's E3 video-game conference, you could see Miyamoto's stamp everywhere, from brand new games like the puppy simulator Nintendogs to highly anticipated sequels like New Super Mario Bros. -- the latest entry in a franchise that has sold an unprecedented 182 million units worldwide to date.

Miyamoto's days at E3 are packed solid; he meets with developers, chats with reporters and occasionally fulfills the lifelong dream of a terminally ill child courtesy of the Make-A-Wish foundation. But he remains cheerful throughout each session, gleeful when he demonstrates a piece of Nintendo DS software about to be released in Japan, a game with brain teasers and math drills meant to stimulate the adult mind. These are the sort of offbeat games that Nintendo is counting on to jump-start a flailing video-game industry in Japan.

Wired News spoke to Miyamoto off the crowded E3 show floor in Los Angeles last month.

Wired News: The Japanese games industry is in trouble, as sales keep dropping. What is Nintendo doing to get things going again?

Shigeru Miyamoto: I don't really think it's a Japanese problem. I think it's an industrywide and worldwide issue. In fact, I'm surprised how well the U.S. has held up; I think the U.S. is more the exception rather than the rule.

What's happening with video games is the same thing that happens with anything new and interesting. At the beginning, everybody wants to see what it is. They gather around and check it out. But gradually, people start to lose interest.

The people who don't lose interest become more and more involved. And the medium starts to be influenced by only those people. It becomes something exclusive to the people who've stuck with it for a long time. And when the people who were interested in it at first look back at it, it's no longer the thing that interested them.

So obviously, it's very important for us to create brand new things that bring back those people. But it's just as important to create the kind of games that current gamers know they like.

WN: If you look, for example, at Space Invaders or Street Fighter II, those games were amazingly popular. But now, space shooters and fighting games are niche genres.

Miyamoto: One of the things that we're looking at as an answer to this issue are games like Nintendogs. It's sold over 400,000 units to date in Japan, and we think it'll just continue to sell for a long time. A great thing about Nintendogs is that one-third of the purchasers of that title are also buying the Nintendo DS hardware. So it's bringing people back, or even bringing people into video games for the first time.

WN: So why is Nintendogs so appealing to the masses?

Miyamoto: Because rather than trying to follow industry trends, it's based on things that people find appealing in general. Not just what they find appealing in a video game.

Moreover, I think that if companies are challenged financially, or are concerned only with profits, they're going to only create things that are safe, products that are proven to sell. And that's what they're going to continue to crank out.

Nintendo's always been about challenging itself to come up with interesting things. People from outside might say that we make many different games with Mario every year, or a lot of Zelda games. But within those titles are always new and interesting challenges. We have the luxury of being both profitable and creative.

WN: Speaking of which, New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS is a rather ambitious follow-up to a revered series. Who are the team members working on the game?
Miyamoto: (Longtime Mario series lead director Takashi) Tezuka and (Zelda series lead programmer Toshihiko) Nakago are heading up the project, and I jump in from time to time. So it's really close to the original Mario team members. With the DS we wanted a game that uses cutting-edge technology -- you're using wireless gameplay for two-player simultaneous Mario -- but also has gone back to the roots of the series to be a game that anybody can pick up because it's very familiar. We wanted a Mario game that everybody can be excited to play.

WN: This is the first traditional side-scrolling Mario game Nintendo has made since 1991. Why wait this long to do a new Mario game in the original style?

Miyamoto: Because we'd spent all this time working on 3-D Mario games. And of course, when we had Rare developing the side-scrolling Donkey Kong Country games, we were able to rely on them, which kept us from coming back to side-scrollers for a long time.

WN: But there's still no sign of the long-rumored Mario 128 for GameCube.

Miyamoto: It's still floating around. We're searching for that fundamental idea that's going to drive the next 3-D Mario game. But we're not sure when that's going to jump out at us. We're doing lots of tests with small groups.

WN: If that's the case -- if the design process is still at the point where you're doing experiments and tests -- is it even possible that Mario 128 could come out on GameCube at this point? Or is it definitely a Revolution title?

Miyamoto: We think we want it on Revolution.

WN: So, there will be no new GameCube Mario platform game.

Miyamoto: Right. The Mario team can't create too many games at the same time, so they're concentrating on the Revolution.

WN: At your E3 press conference, Nintendo announced that the Revolution will be able to download and play games from Nintendo's back catalog. Does that mean that the entire library of Nintendo-published games will be available?

Miyamoto: Technologically speaking, it's possible to run every previous Nintendo game. It's just a matter of picking which ones we want to have available.

WN: The Revolution's controller wasn't shown, but there has been a lot of speculation as to what special functionality it will have. Can you tell us about that?

Miyamoto: Nintendo is always trying to be on the forefront of control innovations, like the analog stick, rumble or wireless. As soon as these are available, our competitors snatch them up.

Because the user interface is going to drive the Revolution software design, that's what's going to make our software stand out. Nobody else is going to be able to do what we do with next-generation game software. So, I can't reveal anything. It's under wraps because it's the big gun. Wired News

Revealed! US Nintendogs!!!

Nintendogs has become a pop-culture phenomenon in Japan and will be available Aug. 22 in the United States. Dogs have become hip fashion accessories, complete with their dedicated lines of jewelry and clothing.

Nintendo's kennel club represents a virtual "who's who" of best-in-show contenders. The U.S. version of the smash-hit pet simulator Nintendogs for Nintendo DS will come in three different packages, each with six different breeds of puppies to begin with, including three breeds - golden retriever, Siberian husky and boxer - not available in the Japanese version. Owners will be able to choose from the most popular breeds to train on their Nintendo DS systems.

Three different packages to choose from:

Package with Labrador retriever on the cover includes:
Labrador retriever
miniature schnauzer
toy poodle
Pembroke Welsh corgi
miniature pinscher
shiba inu

Package with Chihuahua on the cover includes:
Chihuahua
German shepherd
boxer
cavalier King Charles spaniel
Yorkshire terrier
Shetland sheepdog

Package with miniature dachshund on the cover includes:
miniature dachshund
golden retriever
beagle
pug
Siberian husky
shih tzu

Nintendogs lets owners choose a puppy from one of 18 breeds, then raise and train the pup. As you start spending time with your pup you can throw flying discs and balls to improve the pup's agility. You can bathe it when it gets dirty and use your own personal voice commands to train the dog to do tricks. If you train it well enough, your dog will excel in obedience and agility trials and disc competitions, which will earn money that you can use to buy other supplies and puppy breeds. When you earn enough cash, you can buy even more puppies to live with your original pup.

Players can socialize their pups by walking them around the town, where they will meet neighborhood dogs, and maybe even find new toys. Trips to the park and gym offer valuable training time to prepare for agility trials and flying disc competitions. Over time, the pup's stamina will increase so players can explore farther and farther. Players can interact wirelessly with their friends' Nintendogs -- they can set their DS to bark whenever another puppy is within wireless range.

Start teaching your puppy new tricks on Aug 22nd!

New Red DS!!!

As previously reported here at IGNDS, Nintendo will be releasing a red-colored DS unit to Japan. Set for release on August 8, the red DS will carry a standard 15,000 yen price tag, meaning more red for the same amount of yen.

The release of the red DS coincides nicely with the release of Jump Superstars, allowing us to transition into a bit of hot news that we heard about the crossover manga fighter. A few unconfirmed reports indicate that Nintendo and Jump have managed to pack characters from more than 27 Jump properties into the game. And if that's not reason enough to cough up the yen, Jump fans can look forward to a free limited edition Jump comic that's being packed in with the game for early purchasers.
Both the red DS and Jump Superstars are Japan-only items for now. You can get a look at the red system in the media section for this story. As for Jump Superstars, check out our hands on playtest of the game here while you wait for a closer look in early August. IGN

Hot Summer DS!!!

As if the DS hadn't already taken over the Japanese game market, Nintendo has come up with another killer campaign that's sure to set the system on fire. Called the "Hot Summer Campaign," this campaign gives gamers a chance to win a specially-designed DS system.

The Japan-only campaign works like this. Purchase a DS unit or two pieces of software (released during the campaign period) for the DS, GBA or GameCube, register your products at Nintendo's Club Nintendo website, and you'll be entered into a drawing for a number of prizes. Each Club Nintendo account can have at most three entries.
Topping the prize list is a special DS system. Nintendo is taking its current lineup of DS colors, engraving a character portrait onto the top flap, and putting the units onto the prize list as Pure White Mario, Platinum Silver Wario, Graphite Black Koopa, Candy Pink Peach and Turquoise Blue Yoshi. Each style will be given away to 200 people, meaning 1,000 total units. Those who win will be able to have a special message engraved on the unit.

Also included in the prizes is a Panasonic SV-SD-100V audio player. Nintendo will give 1,000 of these away, bundled with an SD memory card that comes pre-loaded with Nintendo music. Closing out the prizes are 3,000 Master Piece series DS cases, 1,000 for each of three colors.

The Hot Summer Campaign takes place between 7/1 and 8/31, so those with addresses in Japan should make sure and pick up some games during that time. IGN

Resident Evil 4 Surpasses Retail Milestone

Capcom's Resident Evil 4, the critically acclaimed survival horror masterpiece for the Nintendo GameCube, has sold more than half a million units since its debut on January 11. According to The NPD Group's sales tracking report, the game claimed the number one position for its launch month of January this year and sales have continued to hold strong. The NPD Group's most recent report, which monitors sales data through April 2005, confirms that the game has surpassed the 500,000 mark through its successful cumulative sales in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, the report reinforces the strength of the Resident Evil series on the GameCube with Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil Ø (Zero) holding the positions as the top three "M" rated titles for the system with combined sales of more than 1.5 million units in the U.S. and Canada.

Based on the popular Resident Evil series, which has sold more than 26 million units worldwide and is Capcom's highest selling series, Resident Evil 4 sees the return of a familiar hero on a mission of the highest level. Resident Evil 4 carries an "M" rating for mature audiences by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board).

"With Resident Evil 4, the series and the entire survival horror genre have been advanced to a whole new level," said Todd Thorson, director of marketing, Capcom Entertainment. "It's been rewarding to see that the incredible response the game has received from fans and critics has been mirrored by a phenomenal retail performance."

In Resident Evil 4 players are reacquainted with Leon S. Kennedy, Raccoon City Police Department's idealistic rookie cop from Resident Evil 2. It has been six years since the destruction of Raccoon City and in that time, the U.S. government has been able to destroy the nefarious Umbrella Corporation. Fast forward to 2004 and players rejoin Leon, who is now a U.S. agent with a top-secret mission. He has been tasked to look into the abduction of the President's daughter and his investigation has led him to a mysterious location in Europe. As Leon encounters unimaginable horrors, he must find out who or what is behind everything. Nintendo
