Japanese DS Sale are on Fire!!!

The DS is on fire in Japan. Spurred by new colors and new releases, Nintendo's dual-screened portable looks like the hottest gaming ticket leading up to the Golden Week holiday period.

Retail tracker Media Create reports that for the week of 4/18 to 4/24, Nintendo managed to sell 95,000 DS hardware units in the country. In addition to this, four DS titles placed in the top ten software chart: Naruto at number 3 (87,000 units sold), Nintendogs: Shiba & Friends at number 4 (75,000), Nintendogs: Miniature Dachshund & Friends at number 5 (49,000) and Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends at number 7 (44,000).
Adding up the individual Nintendogs titles, you come to a total of 169,000 units. This makes Nintendogs the fastest selling DS title ever in Japan.

The DS hardware sales represent a 4.2 times jump from the 22,000 units sold in the previous work. The DS saw a similar jump in hardware sales when black and white units were released on 3/24, suggesting that this week's jump could be attributed to the 4/21 release of pink and blue units, in addition to the presence of some big name software. New DS Downloads in Japan!!!

Nintendo has announced the next phase in its Japan-only download program for the DS. Starting 4/28 (the start of Japan's Golden Week period of holidays) and continuing through 5/29, gamers will be able to take their DS system to participating retailers on the island nation to download special dog data for Nintendogs along with demos of three upcoming DS games: Konami's Ganbare Goemon, Atlus' Chou Shittou Caduceus and Nintendo's own Nou wo Kitaeru Otona no DS Training.

Those who picked up the Japanese version of Nintendogs last week are likely most interested in the dog data. Nintendo is offering players a chance to download Shin-chan, a dog that was apparently raised by game spokesperson and J-pop superstar Utada Hikaru. To make the download, you'll have to have progressed to the "Odekake" section of the game with your own dog. Once the download is made, you'll be able to select to have Shin-chan come over and play with your dog.
The Nintendo DS download service offers DS users a chance to download content to their DS by connecting wirelessly to special terminals set up a retailers throughout Japan. The service debuted earlier this year with a downloadable demo of Bandai's Meteos. IGN

In the latest news buzzing around at nintendo's headquarters, with the combines sales of DS units in Europe, North America, and Japan. Nintendo has reached the 3 million mark.

At this point, the Nintendo DS is riding high off the sales of 16 titles that were released with the DS, including Super Mario 64DS and Wario Ware Touched.

"The launch of Nintendo DS in the UK continues to be an unprecedented success;" commented David Yarnton, Nintendo UK's general manager. "Gamers new and old have embraced the Nintendo DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have handheld console! Nintendo set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, and we have certainly accomplished this."

At this point, the DS has really no rivals in Europe outside the Gizmondo and Zodiac. But once September 1st roles around, that should all change. IGN

Electric Blue DS is Coming this summer!!!

Nintendo of America Inc. introduces the first new color in the Western Hemisphere for its popular Nintendo DS portable video game system. "Electric Blue" debuts in June and will become a permanent color in the DS palette, joining the original silver-and-black model, named "Titanium."

"This eye-catching new color comes at an ideal time," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Nearly 2 million Nintendo DS owners in North America alone have demonstrated they want something new from a hand-held video game system. Soon, consumers will have two popular choices for the innovative dual-screened Nintendo DS, which features touch-screen control, voice recognition and wireless play."

June also will see the release of two exciting new DS games. On June 13, Kirby: Canvas Curse will bring a new touch-screen twist to a popular franchise. Players will draw rainbow paths for Kirby to roll along as he stuns enemies and takes on their abilities. And on June 27, the highly anticipated and highly addictive puzzle game Meteos will have players launching deadly falling meteors back into space with touch-screen precision.Nintendo

Special ElectroPlankton DS!!!

Hoping to be the owner of every single DS design and color available? You may be out of luck, unless you live in Japan -- and even then, you'd have to have lots of luck on your side.

Nintendo has unveiled a special edition of the DS to celebrate the Japanese release of ElectroPlankton. The new edition resembles a standard DS but with original ElectroPlankton artwork from game creator Toshio Iwai on the system's top. We grabbed some pictures from the ElectroPlankton exhibit now running in Tokyo. So how do you go about getting one of these? That's the trick. Ten of these DS units will be given away via drawing to those who fill out a survey at the ElectroPlankton exhibit. As of now, this is the only way to get the unit, so unless you're in Japan to attend the exhibit (it runs until 4/14) and unless you're lucky enough to win the drawing, you're out of luck! IGN
